Newington, VA – December 20, 2006 – CEI has completed almost one year’s worth of comprehensive design, integration and installation work with the launch of Ohio public broadcaster WOSU’s dynamic new HD production facility in Columbus, CEI announced today.

The recently completed project was particularly unique and challenging because the center will be used not only as a cutting-edge production facility, but also as the focal point for a variety of public activities. The new media center is located at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) as the result of a special partnership between WOSU and COSI, one of the nation’s leading, innovative, hands-on science centers. COSI provides Ohio families, students, and teachers with engaging experiences that strengthen their interest and comprehension of science.

The new WOSU facility, occupying almost 12,000 square feet of the COSI building, features complete digital functionality with studios, control room and production areas for television, radio and Internet technologies. The system is connected by fiber optic link to WOSU’s Fawcett Center broadcast headquarters to enable simultaneous broadcasts from both locations.

“We’re excited to be a part of such a special project that provides WOSU with a first-class digital production facility, and COSI with an innovative learning center for the community,” said CEI project manager Tom Hackett. “It is particularly gratifying to know that this facility will be a place where people are inspired by this amazing technology and can get a true feel for broadcast production.”

The WOSU resources at COSI facility include a high-definition production control room, studio, multi-format server systems, and HD edit systems with shared content, a combination exhibit/studio space, and several media viewing areas. Visitors will be able to watch live productions, participate in hands-on digital media and technology activities co-produced with COSI, and experience media literacy workshops and interactive exhibits. COSI also plans to host town meetings, performances, community forums and workshops in the center.

"This digital media center is our showcase," said WOSU General Manager Tom Rieland. “We expect the studio space to be the basis for a remarkable expansion of local programming, but also to serve as civic space open to community groups and organizations.”
