US-Based German TV Group Adds Capabilities To New Virginia Facility For Daily English Language Programming.

Arlington, Virginia -- July 11, 1996 --Deutsche Welle (DW) consulted with CEI to move from its Washington DC location and expand into a larger, more capable technical facility. CEI was then selected to provide turnkey design and engineering services pertaining to:

  • Electrical Power Specification for the technical plant

  • HVAC Systems Specifications

  • Acoustic design

  • MATV system design (VHF, C/KU & DBS)

  • Feed Room (Receive/Transmission) design

  • Studio Stage with Audio & Video Control Room/Post Production

  • Edit Suite

  • Announce Booth

Dave Giblin, CEI Senior Managing Engineer, added, "DW wanted to enhance their programming flexibility. To accomplish this, the facility incorporates a small studio with a chroma key wall suitable for two sets as well as two post production rooms and one control room that features the PINNACLE(tm) Alladin DVE technology." The Deutsche Welle administrative offices and technical plant are located within the same area. The DW programming provides material for overseas German nationals as well as US-related news and information.

BET-Jazz Goes To Air With New Digital Origination Facility Designed & Built by CEI

Communications Engineering, Inc. (CEI) Supports Black Entertainment Television's Jazz Channel Launch in BET's Expanding Television Complex in Washington, DC

Washington, DC -- October 11, 1996 -- Communications Engineering, Inc., a full services broadcast engineering firm, continues their eight year association with BET by delivering a full turnkey facility for the new Jazz Channel. This project involved CEI in every aspect of the new facility including building design and construction, equipment specification, installation and training. CEI Executive VP Lawrence Brody, said "We blended together the latest video, audio and computer technology by utilizing serial digital component video, AES/EBU digital audio and high speed TCP/IP data networking". There are currently two channels of BET Jazz Channel being uplinked to domestic and international cable service providers.

Among the technology employed is Quantel's Edit Box and Hal Express, Sony's LMS system and a Phillips BTS master control switcher. The BET Jazz Channel all digital facility encompasses the following functional areas:

James Conley promoted to Director of Engineering at Communications Engineering, Inc. (CEI)

Mr. Conley Leads Development Team for the Re-Design of NBC News Bureau in Washington DC

Newington, Virginia -- May 21, 1996 -- Communications Engineering, Inc., a full service broadcast engineering firm, announced the promotion of James Conley to the position of Director of Engineering. In his new position, Jim will lead the CEI team of engineering specialists to design, implement and project manage the delivery of state-of-the-art television facilities.

Mr. Conley joined CEI in 1991 and has over 15 years of broadcast engineering experience encompassing engineering management at Washington DC area post production facilities including Group Andre Perry, LTD and Capitol Video Communications, Inc. In 1996 the CEI team is involved with numerous client projects with Jim's current focus involving the NBC News Bureau (Wash DC) renovation and the Black Entertainment Television (BET) 50 foot expanding mobile production truck.

WXIA-TV Expands Newsroom Capabilities in Atlanta With Turnkey Engineering Provided By Communications Engineering, Inc. (CEI)

NBC Affiliate WXIA-TV Plans For 1996 Olympics Coverage And Extended News Capability With New CEI Installation

Atlanta, Georgia -- March 31, 1996 -- Communications Engineering, Inc., a Newington, Virginia based broadcast engineering firm, has completed a turnkey newsroom addition for WXIA-TV, the NBC affiliate, that expands it's news broadcasting capabilities. The new broadcasting project was conceived and begun in 1994 with CEI handling all aspects of the design, creation and integration of the new technology addition. In coordination with ongoing building construction, the site installation was successfully completed by CEI personnel to achieve a February airdate.

Carlos Fernandini, CEI President, said "there were comprehensive planning sessions with the WXIA-TV engineering team to understand the complete operational needs for the expanded news capability. The collaboration was advantageous because we were able to build the most capable, integrated digital system designed to support WXIA-TV in 1996 and beyond." WXIA-TV is part of the Gannett Corporation which has extensive media properties in newspapers, outdoor advertising and television including the USA Today daily newspaper.

Jeff Harland, Director of Implementation Services, added " All of the racks and consoles were prewired at CEI including fabrication of the extensive interconnecting cables that integrate the control rooms in the new plant with the existing facility. This created an efficient installation process that reduced the onsite installation time by 25%."

BET On The Move In 1996 With Design & Engineering By Communications Engineering, Inc. (CEI)

CEI helps Black Entertainment Television Expand with a Cable TV Jazz Channel facility, Mobile Teleproduction Unit, and the Innovative Sound Stage Theme Restaurant

Washington DC -- March 19, 1996 -- Communications Engineering, Inc., a full service broadcast engineering firm, is partnering with BET to expand it's broadcasting capabilities and to support additional entertainment businesses. The new BET Jazz Channel reaches for a mature, expanding music audience and began on-air operations in January. The Jazz technical facility is installed within a new studio production building which is part of the Washington DC BET broadcast plant that was previously built by CEI. The creation of a mobile production truck is underway to support BET's live remote productions and field recording. Further tidbits regarding BET's widely anticipated theme restaurant will have to wait for the grand opening in Landover, Maryland coming this fall.

WETA-TV26 Renovates Facility With CEI To Support The Increased Production Needs Of The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer

The Revamped NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Originates from WETA-TV26 With A Facility Upgrade Designed, Engineered And Built By Communications Engineering, Inc. (CEI)

Arlington, VA -- March 12, 1996 --While dealing with budget constraints and a short timeframe to deliver expanded broadcasting capability, WETA-TV26's Jerry Butler, VP for engineering, operations, production and computer services, reached for CEI to assist with engineering turnkey upgrades. Jerry added, "With the retirement of Robin MacNeil, the entire NewsHour production has moved to our facility in Virginia, and we have upgraded our capabilities. Our immediate broadcast enhancements, such as the new Wheatstone audio board and Louth automation system, also have to fit into our long range facility plans. We have worked closely with CEI to assure that these enhancements support our critical technology transfer into the new WETA-TV26 plant."

The WETA enhancements have been spearheaded by CEI Vice President of Engineering, John Wesley Nash. John added " Our long term plan is to incrementally improve production quality and flexibility while working within the realworld public television budgetary issues. In the new future WETA-TV26 facility we intend to integrate new and existing technologies to support the growing broadcast needs of one of the nation's leading public broadcasting organizations."

The functional areas being addressed include:

  • Renovation and Relocation of Master Control

  • Renovation of the General Tape Area

  • Renovation of Audio Studio Control Room # 1

  • Construction of two new Tape Production Rooms

  • Integration of four new Sony BVP-700 Studio Cameras

  • Expansion of graphics area including a new Quantel PaintBox Express

  • Consulting Services and Engineering Support in specifying, selecting and integrating a new Master Control Automation System

CEI will continue to work with WETA-TV26 to design and integrate a new two story facility in Arlington, Virginia.
